ANCILE

During the reign of Numa Pompilio a sacred shield, “Ancile”, was dropped from the sky by Zeus as a symbol of the protection and invincibility of Rome. The nymph Egeria had revealed that whoever possessed this shield would become very powerful, therefore Numa commissioned the blacksmith Mamurlo Veturio to forge another 11 identical shields making it impossible for the enemies of Rome to recognize the authentic one. Numa entrusted the 12 shields to 12 young patricians, called Salli, who kept them in the royal palace.
